Comparing nutrition: powder, portions and prepared drinks
Two nutrition figures are only directly comparable when they use the same basis. A value per 100 g powder answers a different question from the value for a prepared drink. Our product pages separate these figures into labelled columns.
Start with the reference quantity
Check whether the column refers to 100 g powder, a scoop or a prepared serving. For Protein Drink Mix Vegan 560 g, the label lists 54 g protein per 100 g powder and 15 g for the usual portion of 28 g powder with 250 ml water. These figures refer to different quantities of the same product.
Include the preparation liquid
Water and milk do not produce the same portion values. The Protein Bake Mix label lists 89 kcal for a pancake prepared with water and 104 kcal for one made with semi-skimmed milk. Extra foods or toppings add to those values. Do not apply a nutrition figure to a different preparation method.
Read serving count alongside pack size
A 560 g tub of Protein Drink Mix Vegan provides 20 servings of 28 g. Using the alternative 42 g serving stated on the label gives fewer servings from the same tub. A price per serving can only be compared when the serving size is specified.
Distinguish pack price from unit price
The pack price is the amount you pay for that product. The unit price refers to a standard quantity such as one kilogram or one litre. It helps compare pack sizes, but does not by itself describe the composition or suitability of a product. Compare ingredients and directions too.
Check the specific product for allergens
Allergens are highlighted in the ingredients list. Protein Drink Mix Vegan contains soya, for example, while Protein Bake Mix contains milk and egg among other ingredients. Similar product names do not mean identical recipes.
